As a teacher, your support doesn't have to stop when your students leave your classroom. There are many ways to get involved and help create a more accepting LGBTQ school environment for your students. The following are a list of high school organizations and clubs, along with helpful links on starting your own chapters at your school.
Gay Straight AllianceThe Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student run club that aims to create a safer school environment by promoting positive interactions between the straight and LGBTQ communities. Groups meet and discuss LGBTQ issues as well as advocate for a safer school by trying to stop homophobia and transphobia (Gay Straight Alliance, 2013).
While this is a student run organization at both the middle and high school levels, most schools still require there to be a faculty advisor. You can provide support for your students by vocally advocating a need for a GSA at your school and letting students know that you are always happy to help the club in any way they need.
