What's the difference between sex and gender? In the most basic sense, sex is related to biology — chromosomes, gonads, internal and external genitalia. Gender is psychological. It has to do with how male (mascuiline) or female (feminine) somebody believes themselves to be and is linked to societal gender norms (Chiland, 2003). For many people, sex and gender line up, however this is not always the case.
What's the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation? In the past, many definitions of gender identity included sexual orientation. This assumes that sex roles and sexual roles are the same thing, which is not true. Gender identity is the gender in which a person identifies as - male, female, or genderqueer. Sexual orientation is determined by who a person decides to fall in love with or have sexual relationships with - homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual. They are not the same thing, regardless of what out-of-date definitions of gender identity might say (Chiland, 2003).
What is gender expression and how is it different from gender identity?Gender expression is the external manifestation of gender — it's what the outside world sees. People chose to express themselves in traditionally masculine, feminine or gender-variant ways through behavior, clothing, haircut, and physical characteristics (Sandeen, 2011). Gender expression is a spectrum ranging from masculine, feminine or somewhere in-between (androgynous). It is important to note that gender expression does not automatically equal gender identity. A woman wearing a men's pantsuit will not automatically identify as a male. She won't automatically be a lesbian either. A man who dresses in drag is not automatically transgendered. Sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender expression are different aspects of people and we need to be careful never to assume things about one because of the another.
